The songs of singer, songwriter, and composer Dan Yurkofsky blur the lines between folk, ambient electronic, and minimalist music. His 2014 debut album, Hoverhill highlights his unique singing voice, delicate arrangements (featuring alt tuned guitars, cello, and keyboard), and introspective lyrics. A review from Folkwords.com described Hoverhill as “a haunting collection of observations and reminiscences.” The album’s third track, “Middle of the Road” was selected for Respirano Records’ 2023 album compilation, which features unique songwriters and bands from New York City and Italy.
Trained as a classical French hornist, Dan shifted to singing and songwriting in college where he embraced folk, progressive rock, and jazz. He went on to front the Boston art-rock band, “Living in Trees.” Throughout the 1990s, he lived in Santa Fe, NM and performed with outstanding musicians from the region. Hoverhill was largely inspired by his memories of life in New Mexico.
Now living in upper Manhattan, Dan continues to write songs and perform. In the works is his latest song project, Sight Unseen.
Dan is the recipient of a residency grant in music composition from the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming. He has taught as an adjunct professor of music and music technology at Mercy University in Dobbs Ferry, New York and at CUNY. He studied English at Vassar College, earned a masters in Music Technology at NYU, and studied music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the Juilliard School evening division in NYC.
